Burst Pipe? Step-by-Step Guide to Minimise Damage

By Done Wright Plumbing · Updated 2026-11-05

A burst pipe releases 8–10 gallons a minute. Every minute counts.

Shut off the water

The main shut-off is usually at the front of the house near the hose bib, in the garage, or at the meter box by the street. Turn it clockwise.

Turn off the water heater

With the supply off, a gas or electric heater can overheat. Switch it to 'pilot' or flip the breaker.

Open faucets to drain the lines

This relieves pressure and empties water that would otherwise keep leaking.

Cut power to wet areas

Water near outlets or fixtures is an electrocution risk.

Document and dry

Photos for insurance, then towels, fans and dehumidifiers.
